Animal Diversity Project
Students do an independent group project (2-3 per group) researching the diversity of the animal kingdom. Chapters 32-34, and 40 are their primary resources, but students are encouraged to do a thorough Internet search as well. The goal of the project is to create an opportunity to creatively detail their understanding of the characteristics that separate individual phyla of invertebrates and vertebrate classes. A significant portion of their grade focuses on how well they incorporate an evolutionary component.
Students will use Photostory 3 or Movie Maker to present their research and learning.

"A Sand County Almanac" is a book that describes the various changes that an enviroment takes. It describes, with extreme care to detail, the seasons and the changes in the enviroment around the authors home. It then goes to describe the variety of behavior of species in different areas such as quails, grouse, and multitudes of other species. It really paints vivid pictures of the scenery in your head and even goes as far as to describe the texture of things it describes. If you're into this kind of book, then it's great, but I'm not, so I didn't enjoy it very much.
The book "A Sand County Almanac" is a book made for the wildlife fanatics; this group does not include me. But reading this book has been a big eye opener. These people truly enjoy and cherish wildlife; it is their passion in life and for that is what I have come to respect them for. The author’s voice is of a silent observer of the animals and how they change with the surrounding seasons. The writer takes you through all four of the seasons and how prey dodges their predators by using the season changes to their advantages. This book uses a lot of metaphors and paints a picture inside your head so you feel like you’re there. The author instead of seeing the cold snow as a burden he sees it as beauty and a miracle. Even though I am a very modern girl I realize that some times its best to leave all the high tech things behind and go and smell the roses and look how beautifully the world is carefully pieced together.
Emily and Salvador,
I'm glad you experienced this book even if it wasn't your favorite read. I do believe you should renew your "spirit" by being in nature and immersing yourself in the sight, smells, sounds and yes textures.
Alright, I'm going to be honest, I didn't enjoy this book as much as the ones I have read before. This book tends to talk much more about wildlife and out-doorsy sort of things with its focus on environments and animals that live there. Though, I can see where the author is coming from and his great passion with nature, for I feel the same passion only with other topics. But don't get me wrong, I do like nature, just not on the same level. Though, there was a way I really related to the book and it was that I could really see the detail the book went into with such things as behavior of animals depending on different variables etc. and I really enjoy details, only there were so many in this book you really had to take the time and read it slowly to get the full impact, regretfully I don't enjoy reading slowly. For this reason I'm sure many other people would enjoy this book.
The book "A sand County Almanac" is not really a book of my taste. Although the book did have its intresting areas. i really related to this book because of the biology 2 class that i took last year. this book described the changes within an environment, the seasons changes in and around the authors home. Most intresting to me was the variety of species in different areas that was described. I enjoyed how the author used his life and placement to describe. All in all i somewhat enjoyed this book.
I have to agree with both Dawn and Zoe. This wasn’t one of my favorite books to read but I am glad I got to experience the book. The Sand County Almanac had three main topics that show what the Leopold thought of the world. His love of nature and use of words captured me into a different thought process. I began to see the world as if it were something needed to survive and not something to just live on. Land is a community of living things, which argues for the study of ecology, land is to be loved and respected, which argues for conservation ethics, and land yields the harvest of culture are the three main topics of this book. Leopold brought forth the awareness of land as a living community that needs to be loved and respected and is the deepest source of our cultural harvests. I liked the analogies that Leopold uses, such as the one where he compares the March goose to a well educated women. I think that Leopold wrote this book to help the human race see that land is an organism and a circulating system in which we are just part of.
I enjoyed reading this book very much. This book takes place in southern Wisconsin, where my dad and his family grew up. I am familiar with this area, as it is where i commonly go for summer vactions to go fishing and spend time wtih my family. Aldo Leopold ws a great writer as he used great descriptive words to describe the animnals, trees, grassses, and other objects he noticed while being in the great outdoors. what i really liked about this book,is that Leopold talks about the little thinks he noticed in the outdoors, that the average person would never know even existed. He was a great writer and environmentalist. My favorite part of the book is when he tells about one of his fly fishing adventrues when he goes for brown trout in a small stream in Northern Wisconsin. I enjoyed this book alot and i reccommend it to anyone who likes the outdoors.
Yeah! I'm glad you liked the book! I did too! I forgot it was set in Wisconsin.
"A Sand County Almanac" by Aldo Leopold was a very interesting book. His love for nature what wast captured me within the first few chapters. It wasnt one that I absolutely loved but it gave me somthing to do. It was very visual in its words and phrases and it was almost as if you were really there. I really enjoyed the details, I'd have to say that they were the only reason why i absolutely enjoyed the book. If you like to hunt or just to be outdoors 24/7 this is definately a book you need to read!
I really enjoyed this book. There is something about being surrounded by the peacful living of other things. It was definately and eye opener to how some people view wildlife. This book did make me think of Erik and helped me to better understand what it is like for Erik when he is hunting and fishing. The book was good but it would be hard for someone who doesn't share the passion for the outdoors to relate to it. However, I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys the outdoors and its wildlife.
Jorie and Bekah,
I'm glad you both identify with the book!
“A Sand County Almanac” is different from most books in an interesting way. It is set up like it was a long calendar going through all the months and different seasons. The author, Aldo Leopold, describes in great detail the environment and the animals that are found around his hometown. Everything, from the animals to the plants are described in extreme detail. Leopold mentions hunting which I can relate to. I found this book interesting, but it was almost to the point where it was overwhelming and boring with all the detail. There are some very good points are brought up throughout the book; environmentalists may enjoy the topics in this collection. I would not, however, recommend this particular book unless you are very interested in the environment and being outdoors.
“A Sand County Almanac,” written by Aldo Leopold, was a very good and interesting book. In this book Leopold describes the outdoors in a lot of detail. He describes everything about the outdoors such as plants, animals, and other things found in the outdoors. Leopold’s words are very descriptive and he describes a lot of the things other people who are not the outdoor enthusiast would miss. I enjoy the outdoors and hunting so I really liked this book and I could relate to it in some ways. If you are an outdoor enthusiast or you would like to see how the world is viewed by an outdoor enthusiast I strongly recommend reading this book.
Jordan and Taelor,
I do think this book is very different from other books. I'm glad you enjoyed the descriptions, Jordan. When you are out and about you'll remember some of the descriptions. Mrs. Cochran
There were portions of "A Sand County Almanac" that I enjoyed and portions that I didn't. It was interesting to me to note how the changes in seasons and the environment effect the species that live there. It really opened my eyes to the extent of the effect that the smallest change can have on the world around it. It also was interesting to note the variety of species that inhabit the area the author spoke of; many of these species could easily have been overlooked. On the other hand, the author's love for details left me overwhelmed at times. All in all, "A Sand County Almanac" was a worthy last book to read.
I’m glad that Erik was able to enjoy the book but I would have to agree with the other blogs that I could not much relate to this book, now don’t get me wrong I love the outdoors and to watch the wild life but the book almost entirely skipped that part of nature and was more focused on the scenes of the environment. , I can see where the author is coming from and his great passion for nature but I was hoping to see that same passion expressed in all the other aspects of the environment as well. But after FINISHING the book I think that it would be more excellent to skip the book and experience the trip there for myself.
Anna and Billy,
Hope it was an eye-opener anyway. Have a good summer.
