Animal Diversity Project

Students do an independent group project (2-3 per group) researching the diversity of the animal kingdom. Chapters 32-34, and 40 are their primary resources, but students are encouraged to do a thorough Internet search as well. The goal of the project is to create an opportunity to creatively detail their understanding of the characteristics that separate individual phyla of invertebrates and vertebrate classes. A significant portion of their grade focuses on how well they incorporate an evolutionary component.
Students will use Photostory 3 or Movie Maker to present their research and learning.

Silent Spring was a really good book. I loved learning about how Rachel Carson became an icon for ecologist and feminists. After reading this book, Carson became one of my inspirations to continue school and follow my dreams. She loved all aspects of science. My favorite thing about her was that she loved Marine Biology. She also showed a great interest in writing and they way she combined what she loved together. I also liked learning about dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane, also known and DDT. It was very interesting because I already had some idea of what DDT was and I just built more of an understanding of its pro's and cons.

The Silent Spring manifest was very interesting. Although I would have rather read the actual Silent Spring by Rachel Carson, I enjoyed reading about her and her work from an outside point of view. Rachel Carson was a pioneer in the environmental movement. She was an inspiration to many environmentalists and scientists, both male and female. I too, appreciated her love of marine biology; a branch of biology I consider very interesting. Her concern for the environment, animals and even humans showed her strong character and a realistic point of view. I was also surprised that she was one of the first people to introduce the topic of biological magnification to the public. The DDT was harming many more animals and even people than America realized and she was partially responsible for the decrease of DDT used. I also learned a lot about the history of pesticides. All in all, it was an entertaining book and I enjoyed it.

Anna, the manifest surprised me too! I really thought it was interesting to know the history of the EPA.

The Silent Spring was a very interesting book. It was very interesting learning about Rachael Carson and how she was so influential in Marine Biology. She was one of the first ecologists and she was a woman too. This book is very interesting as it shows how Rachael Carson was really one of the first people tointroduce bilogical magnification. I enjoyed this book as it talked a lot about Marine Biology, which to me is a very interesting subject as i love the outdoors an especially marine environments which is a result of fishing all the time. I enjoyed this book a lot, but i liked The Sand Country Almanac better as i connected better with the book. However, i would recommend it to others as it is a very interesting book.
